2025 is a pivotal year for the future of shipping. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set an ambitious strategy for reducing the sector’s greenhouse gas emissions.
This strategy set the stage for transformative change across the maritime sector and 2025 will be the year when the details fall into place.
This past April, IMO member states convened at the Marine Environment Protection Committee 83 (MEPC 83) to hammer out the details of specific measures that will guide the sector’s decarbonisation in the years to come. This was a pivotal moment for the maritime industry to strengthen its climate commitments and set a clearer course toward a sustainable future. It was also the first time a UN agency set a global price on emissions.

The next Marine Environment Protection Committee, the Extraordinary Session will take place in the fall of 2025, followed by the 84th session in April 2026.
