From fraudulent documents to illegal ship-to-ship transfers, the shipping industry has seen a sharp rise in substandard and deceptive shipping practices in recent years. These not only pose significant risks to the environment and human welfare by causing collisions, spills, and crew abandonment, but also highlight notable gaps in maritime governance and the urgent need to address them.
Last week, a newly formed maritime governance task force organised its initial workshop to begin tackling these issues. Hosted by Lloyd's Register, the London workshop brought together 40 industry leaders from across the maritime value chain, government representatives, and other experts. Participants worked on various solution areas, including transparency, registry legitimacy, and political will, and discussed how different stakeholders can support these efforts.
These discussions and outcomes will lay the groundwork for the Global Maritime Forum's future maritime governance work and shape the subsequent workstreams of the task force.
