From pilots to practice: Methanol and ammonia as shipping fuels

PolicyFuel and energy

Since 2020, the Mapping of Zero-Emission Pilots and Demonstration Projects has report series has presented snapshots of the evolving landscape of innovation in zero-emission shipping across ship technologies, fuel production technologies, bunkering, and infrastructure.

The sixth edition, From pilots to practice: Methanol and ammonia as shipping fuels, finds that both fuels are now 'ready' – methanol for low-carbon operation and ammonia for piloting – representing a significant increase in maturity since the report's first edition. This year's report, which is based on interviews with ~40 influential industry organisations, brings together key learnings from pilot projects so far and aims to establish remaining priorities for action to assist the industry in its long-term decarbonisation planning.

The report reveals significant and rapid progress in the development of methanol and ammonia as zero-emission fuels, but it also notes that technology readiness is not enough in and of itself to drive the change needed at the pace required. Clear action from the IMO and policymakers s needed to drive wider uptake of both fuels moving forward.
