A new Getting to Zero Coalition report explores the implementation of green shipping corridors as a means to decarbonise the shipping sector.
For shipping to decarbonise by 2050, zero-emission fuels and vessels need to be deployed at scale within the next decade. Though piloting and demonstrations of technologies are already in progress, it will be challenging to scale up solutions industry-wise.
The implementations of green corridors—specific trade routes between major port hubs where zero-emission solutions have been demonstrated and are supported—can create favourable conditions for accelerated actions.
The study suggests that four critical building blocks need to be in place to establish a green corridor:
Cross-value-chain collaboration
A viable fuel pathway
Customer demand
Policy and regulation
